This book is based on the life of my father. It is a true story of child sexual abuse which spans five generations. My father was a pedophile. He molested me throughout my childhood. Years later, he abused my children. He sexually violated dozens of other children throughout his life. Some friends and relatives knew of his behaviors, and others did not. Of all the many people who knew that my father was a sex offender, no one spoke out to protect other children from his assaults. It has taken me seven years to research and write this book. His surviving hospital records, letters from and to him, and more than one hundred and fifty interviews form the basis of this story. My father asked us children to remain silent because he loved us. As a family, we remained silent because we loved him. Friends kept the silence because they loved our family. We all believed that not speaking about it was the best thing to do, the loving thing to do. However, these silences about his offenses allowed my fathers sexual assaults on children to continue for almost forty years. Because I love my own children and my family, as well as children who are not my own, because I also love my father, today I no longer keep silent. I have written this book to encourage child sexual abuse survivors and their families and friends to join me in speaking out. It is time to break silence about the perpetrators we know and, equally important, to tell what happened when we began to talk with each other. It is time to speak.
